A GUIDE FOR A TRIP
A GUIDE FOR THE TRIP
Psalms 119:105-112 (KJV) Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
I have sworn, and I will perform it, that I will keep thy righteous judgments.
I am afflicted very much: quicken me, O LORD, according unto thy word.
Accept, I beseech thee, the freewill offerings of my mouth, O LORD, and teach me thy judgments.
My soul is continually in my hand: yet do I not forget thy law.
The wicked have laid a snare for me: yet I erred not from thy precepts.
Thy testimonies have I taken as an heritage for ever: for they are the rejoicing of my heart.
I have inclined mine heart to perform thy statutes alway, even unto the end.
As dad reached for the Bible, Herbert sighed. He hated family devotion, but his parents thought it was so important. "The Bible is about now, tomorrow, and forever," Mother often said.
"You can learn a lot from the past-like how nkt to make the same mistake others made."
Dad, too, encouraged Bible reading. "God's son, Jesus, lived on earth without making one mistake. Its interesting to read abkut it ib God's word."
Herbert said didn't agree. He thought the Bible was boring. "It's all Labour people who lived thousands of years ago," he said. "Things are so different now."
When Dad announced that he was going to Australia on business and his family could go along, Herbert was excited. One day he brought home some books and maps from the his school teacher. "Mr. Austin's been to Australia," Herbert said. "He told me all about it. Lots of things are different there. Look! He loaned me a guidebook. It tells you things to do and go places to go."
"That's great, Herbert, "Dad told him, "but won't it bore you to read all this? And your teacher-didn't he make any mistakes and have any problems?
"Oh, sure," laughed Herbert. "He told me about it so I won't make the same mistakes. And these books won't bore me. I'll learn how to have a good trip and how to get along in that country. It helped Mr. Austin on his trip, and it will help me, too."
Dad nodded. "A guidebook is a good idea," he agreed, "but since you never seemed interested in reading the guidebook of you most important journey, I'm a little surprised that you're interested in this one."
Hebert stared at Dad. "What journey?" he asked. "What guidebook?"
"Your journey through life," answered Dad.
"The Bible is the guidebook, and God-the author-is the best guide for that journey."
Herbert continued to stare. He had never thought of it that way. "You're right, Dad," Hebert agreed finally.
